“Don’t cry Elizabeth. I promise I will write to you every day.”
“But I will feel so alone without you Edward,” she sobbed.
“You will make new friends at your new school and besides who else will keep me informed of what is happening here. I promise you, when I am old enough to look after you, we will get our own home. I will look after you.”
“Oh look who is here to say goodbye,” Elizabeth looked over her brother’s shoulder as Aaya Asha came with Raju’s wife Malti, her son Vijay and daughter - Mayavanti.
“Asha,” Edward smiled at his ayah, who was looking as broken as his sister.
“Edward Baba, so the day has come,” she said placing her hand on his shoulder. She felt a stab in her heart, as she saw the packed cases and Elizabeth’s tears. She felt for these children who had lost their dear, beautiful mother at such a tender age and now, they were being so spitefully separated. But that was the way of the sahibs. It was normal for them to send their children away so callously. It would have been different if Victoria Memsahib was still alive, she was sure of that. No sooner had she seen the new memsahib, she had known that the children’s days of fun and laughter would be numbered. She didn’t have one single maternal bone in her body, her own two children from her first marriage, packed off to boarding school, as soon as her first husband died. She had such cold eyes. The home had lost its warmth, its vitality, its light and its soul, Victoria Memsahib.
“When you come back, do remember to visit. I will be right here in the village, like always, waiting for you,” Asha said, thankful that at least one of these precious children would be united with their maternal aunt.
“Will you? You won’t forget us like father will you?”
“No Edward Baba. I will not forget you, how can I forget you? I have known you from the time of your birth, held you in my hands,” Asha held back the tears, if she broke now, the children would break furthermore, she had to show the stiff upper lip, just like the sahibs. “Mayavanti has brought something for you,” Asha looked around at Mayavanti and nodded. Mayavanti stepped forward shyly. Her big brown eyes filled with surma .
“What’s this?”
“It’s a box her father made. You can store your pencils in it, look it slides open, it’s made of sandalwood.”
Edward looked at the Raju’s handicraft, a carpenter by trade. “Thank you Mayavanti.” Mayavanti smiled and lowered her eyes shyly.
“It will remind you of us. It will remind you of home.”
“Yes. I will miss you all so much and I will be back,” Edward smiled at Mayavanti reassuringly and then at Raju, as he saw him approaching.
“Thank you Raju.”
Raju stepped forward wanting to say something when Henry, their uncle appeared.
“Come, come Edward. You are wasting precious time chatting with the natives; they’ll begin to think we care.
